You are bidding on 10 BEACH PLUM SEEDS - Prunus maritima .Note the pictures - these are growing in pure sand with no problem . A suckering deciduous shrub with a dense, rounded form, beach plum has dull green leaves that are pale green beneath. Single or double white flowers bloom in mid-spring, maturing to edible 1" purple fruit in late summer ( Aug - Sept ) . The half- to one-inch-diameter fruits ripen in late summer and are generally reddish to deep purple with a waxy bloom. They are quite acid with a crisp, tart, juicy flesh and cherry-like pit, and can be substituted for cherries or plums in recipes. Noteworthy Characteristics: This shrub is native from coastal Maine to Virginia. Extremely salt tolerant. Care: Grow in any moist but well-drained soil. If needed, trim after flowering. Height 6 ft. to 10 ft. USDA Hardiness Zone 3 - 8 Medicinal use : Although no specific mention has been seen for this species, all members of the genus contain amygdalin and prunasin, substances which break down in water to form hydrocyanic acid (cyanide or prussic acid). In small amounts this exceedingly poisonous compound stimulates respiration, improves digestion and gives a sense of well-being.Edible parts : Fruit - raw or cooked. Very variable in quality, the best forms are sub-acid to sweet, the fruit can be eaten out of hand, used in pies, preserves etc or be dried for later use. The fruit is about 15 mm in diameter and contains one large seed. Seed - raw or cooked. Other uses : A green dye can be obtained from the leaves.
