THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS: A narrator sings the opening stanzas of the classic poem while we see the house at rest. Santa lands on the roof, comes down the chimney, and opens his bag. The toys march out and decorate the tree, with the toy soldiers shooting balls from their cannon, a toy airplane stringing a garland like skywriting, and the toy firemen applying snow. A blimp delivers the star to the top. Meanwhile, Santa fills the stockings. His laughter awakens the children, who sneak downstairs to see what is happening. The toys rush to their places, and Santa escapes up the chimney just in time. CHRISTMAS COMES BUT ONCE A YEAR: The children at the orphanage are thrilled to wake up and find plenty of new toys on Christmas morning. Unfortunately, all of them break or fall apart within a few seconds. Prof. Grampy, an inventor, passes by in his motorized sled and hears the wailing of the disappointed orphans, which brings him to the door to investigate. When he learns what is wrong, he puts on his thinking cap and quickly comes up with a plan to make everything all right. He sneaks into the kitchen through the window, takes out every pot, pan, plate, spoon, etc., and builds better toys than the kids could have ever dreamed of. A CHRISTMAS WITHOUT SNOW: A newly divorced and jobless woman (Michael Learned) in a strange city far from home joins a church choir and, under the direction of a stern but gifted choir master (John Houseman), she becomes part of a group striving toward a common goal: to shape a ragtag assembly of amateurs into a chorus capable of performing Handel's "Messiah" for the Christmas service.
