They grow quickly and easily from seed but spread slowly by underground rhizomes. Cattails are an essential part of neutralizing wetland environments and are grown all over the world. Because they have a deep root system they are used for erosion control along the banks of ponds and lakes. Native people's historically used cattails as a starchy food source. The young shoots can be eaten in Spring, the roots ground for flour anytime and the young green seed heads cooked and eaten like corn on the cob. Cattails are on the list of 'The Top 20 Wild Edible Plants' of North America. Perennial Cattails require a constantly moist to wet environment and can be planted as much as 2 feet in water. They are easily started from seed and germinate in about 2 weeks. Started in a pot they can be planted in the desired location in the late Summer to early Fall. Full sun to partial shade.
