12th Air Force White Back Patch WWII Vintage Italy Europe

Description: The Patch: This Auction is for 1 WWII Vintage 12th Air Force shoulder patch with a white back. This patch is in good condition. It has a very nice white backing. This patch does not glow under the UV light and is guaranteed to be authentic. The History: The 12th Air Force was activated on August 20th, 1942 at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C. It immediately moved to England for Operation Torch. On November 8th, 1942, the Landings occurred near Casablanca and elements of the 12th secured air bases in Morocco. The Headquarters of the 12th moved to Algeria and provided air cover for Allied ground forces. They downed over 400 enemy aircraft in the process. The 12th took part in the Tunisian campaign attacking enemy forces that broke through the Kassarine Pass. It helped break through the Mareth Line and helped reduce Axis strongholds in Tunisia. The 12th next helped establish Allied air superiority over Sicily. They moved across to Italy and helped stop Axis counter attacks at Salerno and Monte Cassino. The 12th also provided air cover for the invasion of Southern France and the attacks into Northern Italy. It remained in Italy until it was inactivated on August 31st, 1945.
