Description: 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Up for auction is this 1788 Vermont, Colonial Copper Coin. The coin is roughly 27 millimeters and weighs 6.7 grams or 104 grains. Here is a brief history of how these coins came to be struck: On June 15, 1785, the House of Representatives of the Freemen of Vermont authorized Reuben Harmon Jr. of Rupert, (Vermont) the exclusive right to mint copper coins at a minimum weight of 1/3rd of an ounce or 160 grains over a two-year period. Harmon posted a required bond and began establishing his mint situated beside Hagar's Brook in Rupert. In October 1785, Harmon sought an extension of his exclusive two-year contract. An act, extends the agreement eight years from July 1, 1787, with a dramatically different coin design. Obverse of the 1787 & 1788 design is a bust, encircled with a new motto reading AUCTORITATE VERMONTENSIUM. which translates as by authority of Vermont. The reverse of the coin depicts a seated woman, and the inscription INDE ET LIB an abbreviation of independence and liberty. The new design closely resembled the British halfpenny then in circulation in the American colonies. A common explanation of the redesign of Vermont's coins, so close to the British half-pence model, has been made to make their circulation and exchange easier beyond Vermont's boundaries. These early Colonial Coins were hand struck, often from very worn and damaged dies. To make matters worse, most Vermont coppers were struck on poor and defective planchets! Taking all of that into account, I grade this coin as a VG / Fine (Very Good / Fine) or a bit nicer. Please look at the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality for yourself. Own a piece of history! This coin was circulating in the early days of the United States, before the US Mint of Philadelphia even began production in 1793.
