Description: Acts Passed at the First Session of the Twenty-Fourth Congress of the United States. Published by Authority. City of Washington: Printed by Blair & Rives, 1836. CONDITION: The 188-year-old softcover book measures 9.5x6 and has a total page count of 360 pages including an index. There is chipping to the front and back cover and some curling to the page ends. There is some surface soiling and faded writing on the front cover. The paper is brittle and foxing and toning is found throughout. In addition to the treaty concluded at New Echota in the state of Georgia on the 29th day of December 1835 by General William Carroll, this book also contains three early railroad acts. Also, acts dividing the Michigan territory, admitting Michigan and Arkansas as states and creating the Wisconsin Territory. This book also contains funding for Indian Removal. In 1836, Congress passed several appropriations bills to fund the enforcement of the Indian Removal Act and the relocation of various tribes, including the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, Weas, Piankeshaws, Delawares, Keshaws, Shawanees, Seneca and Choctaw. These appropriations were crucial for the logistical support of the forced migrations, including military escorts, transportation, and provisions for the tribes during their journey to the Indian Territory. Creation of Indian Territory: Although the formal establishment of the Indian Territory was not a single act in 1836, this year was critical in consolidating the legal and administrative framework for Indian resettlement. Congress and the executive branch worked on defining the boundaries and governance of this newly designated territory, where displaced tribes were being relocated. This set the stage for the Indian Territory to become a large-scale holding area for tribes forcibly removed from their lands. These congressional actions in 1836 were pivotal in advancing the removal policy that led to the Trail of Tears and other forced migrations of Native Americans under the Indian Removal Act.
