1851 Antique Religious Book "Psalms of David,” in English, French, & German

Description: This book of the Psalms of David was published in 1851 by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. The psalms appear in the book in three languages: English, French and German. The morning and evening daily prayers are presented for a series of 30 days, with each language presented in side-by-side columns. Brown boards, gilt-colored text on front cover in all three languages. The book is 9.2” by 6” and is 202 pages. Interior front binding hinge shows cracks. Boards show wear at edges and corners. Pencil notation on first frontspiece from previous sale. Name of early owner inscribed on title page. Interior pages unmarked and free of stains or tears. There is some waviness to the pages, which does not detract from legibility. All pages are intact. Stored and shipped in protective clear Mylar cover (see final photo). The Society was formed in 1698 to increase awareness of the Christian faith through education and publishing. As the British Empire expanded in the next two centuries, so did the Society’s activities. From Wikipedia: “SPCK's early publications were distributed through a network of supporters who received books and tracts to sell or give away in their own localities. Large quantities of Christian literature were provided for the Navy, and the Society actively encouraged the formation of parish libraries, to help both clergy and laity. By the 19th century, members had organized local district committees, many of which established small book depots - which at one time numbered over four hundred.” This nearly 175-year-old work is titled on the cover: Le Psautier ou les Psaumes de David; The Psalter or Psalms of David; Der Psalter oder Die Psalmen Dabids.
