Description: The half dollar was the largest denomination affected by The Coinage Act of February 21, 1853, which reduced the weight of silver coinage in an attempt to stabilize the country's silver shortage. To differentiate these new, lower-weight coins, arrows flanking the date and a halo of rays on the reverse were added. The 1853 Arrows and Rays half dollar is an ever-popular issue as a one-year type coin (the rays were removed but the arrowheads remained from 1854-1855). Offered here in select condition, both sides are well-struck and display a pale golden iridescence. Bright luster flashes with a semi-prooflike quality in hand making for an overall impressive example! - Liberty Seated Half Dollar
