Description: The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore. Collected by Himself. In Ten Volumes. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans. 1854. Signed binding by Hayday & Co., uniform binding measuring 6.75 x 4.5”, 12mos. In fair condition. Full leather boards normally scuffed at edge and worn/bumped at corners. Heads and tails of leather spines rubbed; Vol. VII’s head lifted with exposed binding. Rear board of Vol. VII bumped at top edge. Edges of text-blocks speckled brown/red. Hinges rubbed, but intact. Title and volume labels may exhibit light chipping around edges, but all remain legible. Gilt lettering and deco normally soiled and dulled, but attractive. Binder’s ink stamp found on bottom edges of front end-pages (verso). Front gutters beginning to split in most volumes. Some stickers found on front paste-downs. Previous ownership bookplate found on Vol. X’s front paste-down: “William Taylor McArthur, M.D., California.” Text-blocks lightly toned around edges of leaves. Bindings intact. James Hayday (1796-1872), bookbinder. In 1825 Hayday became one of the auditors of the Journeymen Bookbinders' Trade Society. In 1833 he rented premises at 31 Little Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, where he continued until his retirement in 1861 at which time he sold the use of his name to William Mansell, who succeeded to the bookbinding establishment. An innovative craftsman, Hayday maintained that printed books ought to open freely and lie flat. To achieve this, and to obviate the disfigurement of the grain of the leather caused by the repeated opening of traditionally bound books, Hayday introduced the cross or pin-headed grain (i.e. Turkey morocco). He sewed books fully along every sheet, a method that caused additional thickness that he remedied by sewing with silk, rather than thread. Furthermore, he dispensed with the customary paper backing, instead directly fastening the leather cover. RARES1854BHKB 10/24 - HK2148
