In 1887 James Dewing and his associates conceived the idea of publishing the grandest California pictorial book of the nineteenth century, which would make money while taking advantage of the growing fascination with California and the West. Copying the format and title of William Cullen Bryant's highly successful Picturesque America, they selected John Muir (1838-1914) as editor and a group of artists including photo-gravures and wood engravings by Thomas Moran (engraving listing picture 8), Julian Rix, Frederick Remington (engraving picture 12), Thomas Hill, and other prominent American artists of Californias canyons, mountains, and rivers, as well as aspects of pioneer life. An incredible production, each book is set up the same with frontispieces, original engravings on beautiful papers, lettered tissue-guards. An elaborate subscription publication. Bindings tight and square, all in good order, no previous owners name or other markings, no stains or odors or foxing. There is some minor soiling to the cloth covers, edge or corner wear, a few look like the end papers might have a seam tear but nothing serious to note at all.
