Description: This is a 1923 New York University Violet yearbook. It is 100 years old and in good condition. Among notables mentioned in the book in the Phi Beta Kappa section (page 216) is Dr. Theodore Distler, who was president of Franklin and Marshall College. Another is attorney Lester Denonn. Lester Denonn's graduation photo appears on page 90. Rabbi Mitchell Salem Fisher is also mentioned as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and his graduation photo is on page 95. . The New York Times writes: Theodore A. Distler (1899- 1991) was president emeritus of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster He held the presidency from 1941 to 1954. Later he was executive director of the Association of American Colleges in Washington, which named him president emeritus in 1965. For two years he was president of the Commission for Independent Colleges and Universities in Harrisburg, Pa. He was interim president of Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1969-70. Mr. Distler, who was born in Brooklyn, attended Brown University. After service with the Naval Reserve, he graduated in 1922 from New York University, where he also received an M.A. and a Ph.D. He was a member of the N.Y.U. faculty until 1934, when he became dean of Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., a post he held until 1941. Lester Eugene Denonn (1902-1985), was a Manhattan lawyer for 45 years and a scholar of philosophy. He was a Brooklyn native, earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a law degree from New York University, and a master's degree in philosophy from Cornell University. His photo is on page 90. He practiced law in New York from 1928 to 1973, when he retired from the firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, which he had joined in 1952. Wikipedia writes: Mitchell Salem Fisher (1903/1904 – March 19, 1990) was an American rabbi who resigned from his active rabbinic position in 1930 because of what he described as "institutional restraint" and a separation between preachers and issues in the world. After his resignation, Fisher became a lawyer with a specialization in marriage law. He worked for the Anti-Nazi League in opposition , served as counsel to the New York Board of Rabbis, and played a significant role in the development of family law in New York. He graduated with a B.A. from New York University in 1923, and received an M.A. from Columbia University in 1927, as well as a PhD in 1930. He additionally attended the Jewish Institute of Religion from which he received the John Palmer Prize in 1926 and was ordained as a rabbi in 1927. His graduation photo appears on page 95. There is extensive information and photos relating to fraternities. The book: The yearbook is in good condition. It is 11" tall and 8" wide. Covers are brown cloth over boards. It is hardcover, first edition. Front cover shows "The Violet New York University 1925" on a gold background. There are 270 pages, including advertising. There are no loose or missing pages. There are no binding issues. There is no writing in the book. There is some minor foxing. The edges of the covers show wear and there is a tear at the top of the spine.
