Description: Beautiful set of cards soon to be a century old. By the 1920s, the tobacco card era with its wonderful lithography was pretty much over and strip cards and other cheaper manufacturing methods had taken over. But the Cowans company of Toronto, makers of cocoa and chocolate products, was still producing gorgeous, high-quality sets of non-sports cards. This one, from 1925 and designated V17 in the American Card Catalog, is 'Noted Cats'. A set of 24 brightly-colored cards with gold borders reminiscent of some of the circa 1910 tobacco sets from the various brands of the American Tobacco Co. Issued on cards closer in size to the T206 baseball and later caramel cards, it features many famous felines of the era, who earned Champion status. Complete sets are difficult to find. Fully 50% of the offered set grade Excellent or better. Even the lowest-graded, with their faults such as creases, surface wear or rubber band marks (on the end cards), display nicely with great color. All of the card backs are clean and problem-free. It's a very nice set. The set grades out, using the 1 to 10 point scale, to a hair over 4.0, or solid VG-EX.
