Description: 1930s Composition Ideal Ginger Doll Original 20" - Shirley Temple Predecessor Before there was Shirley, there was GINGER. Ideal created Ginger in the early 1930s and continued making her until 1937. The contract to manufacture the licensed likeness of Shirley Temple was obtained in late 1934, and the first run of Shirley was released for Christmas of 1934. But Ginger remained a beloved doll for many young girls. It seems Ginger was Ideal's first concept of Shirley. Ideal ended up using the Ginger body parts for their Shirley Temple dolls. (Perhaps that was their plan all along, since Ginger's body so resembled the real Shirley.) This 1930's Ideal 18" Ginger doll was obviously cherished and preserved by her original owner. Her condition is remarkable! She needed only a few repairs to her paint/composition. Even her 90-year-old outfit is in good condition! Her composition is colorful and bright. She has a very full original saran wig with original clips on either side of her face. Her dress has the signature Ginger attached panties. She has very little crazing on her composition, but there were a few areas where the paint had chipped and needed repair (see photos). Also, two of her fingers had been broken and needed to be rebuilt. Those repairs have been made. As most Ideal Ginger dolls, she is unmarked. But she and her original outfit can be identified in books about early Ideal composition dolls. Because most Gingers are not marked, they are often not identified and not preserved. To find one in original condition is rare. This survivor Ginger doll is a great find for collectors of composition dolls. Don't miss out on the chance to own this little piece of history.
