A typical western sector German family prepares for a tough winter in Russian-blockaded Berlin. Bombed out of three homes during the war, the von Schmudes expect little better treatment this winter, what with power cuts, tight food rationing and a severe coal shortage. As a construction worker, Alfred receives 260 marks a month, comparable to $46 at legal rate of exchange. The family finds ways of making ends meet. One of the three rooms in the von Schmude apartment is rented out for 30 marks a month; Frau von Schmude occasionally goes into the Russian sector to purchase black market coal; every Sunday the family goes into Grunewald Forest to gather wood; and Alfred's company allows him to care for 40 tobacco plants which grow in a field in back of a machinery warehouse. Despite hardships, Alfred and his clan are glad they live in the western sector. Photo measures 9 x 7.5inches. Photo is dated 11-28-1948.
