1949 Hotel Wife by Ruth Lyons Paperback Book

Description: good or better condition. HOTEL WIFE YOU may condemn Jennie, whose poignant story is told in this absorbing novel; but if you have an understanding heart you will recognize that, in spite of her weak and passionate body, she had a basic goodness of soul. . . . She loved Jeff with a pure love . . . but when an old lover returned bringing a momentary rekindling of passion she yielded and Jeff was lost to her. In despair she surrendered to easy love, went astray in a night- mare world of drink and sex. . . . But always her truer instincts revolted. . . . Broken and desperate, she returned to her mother and to the peace of the country. . . . But her passionate body needed love. She married a man who was a magnificent physical specimen but in no other way her true mate. The marriage is the terrific climax of her career. Out of its amazing conflicts she emerges purified and with a true understanding of her destiny. It is the beginning of her struggle onward to real happiness. . . . HOTEL WIFE is a brave, tender, human portrayal of a beautiful woman, finding herself among the pitfalls and torments of modern love. ----------- 3 ----------- CHAPTER ONE SHE stood in the hotel lobby while Jeff registered. It occurred to her that she wasn't embarrassed in the least. She remem- bered the first time she went to a hotel with a man. How shakingly, burningly self-conscious she had been. She had worn a red dress-and she had felt like a large scarlet letter looming up before the quiet-voiced people who walked past her. She knew just what Jeff was writing in the register. Mr. and Mrs. Kendall Reed. Funny, the names men use at a hotel for an illicit love affair. Jeff, for instance used Kendall Reed, the name of his wife's lover. And Jeff, being the sort of per- son he was, probably got more satisfaction out of that than if he socked Kendall Reed one in the jaw. Oh well, some day, somehow, he would get his divorce and they would be Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Taylor Drake. Joseph- what a name! She remembered the day she met him. She had said, "I refuse to call you Joseph, and I will not call you Joe, so it will have to be Jeff." She thought, "You're always so cute, Jennie. Always think- ing of trick names to call people. Anything to be remembered by. The cute, original touch." Her back suddenly stiffened and then relaxed again. A face in the crowded lobby had looked familiar. Strange how you never seemed to overcome that instinctive fear of being recognized in a situation of this sort. No matter how many times it happened you never quite got hardened to it-unless you were "that sort of per- son." You experienced that instinctive fear first, and then you said brazenly, "Well, what of it?" But you knew you weren't being quite truthful. She watched Jeff approaching and waited until he was quite close to her before she smiled at him. His face wore a very bright grin. Consciously bright, she thought, and hated herself for being mean. But the thought persisted. Why must he always grin brightly at her, instead of just smiling? Why must he always be conscious of the fact that he was fifteen years older than she, and attempt to lop off some of those years by going around grinning brightly all the time? She said, "Hi, darling," and pinched his elbow. He breathed, "Lovely," into her ear, and they walked towards the elevators. "I'm sorry it took me so long, but I had to arrange about 3 ----------- 3 ----------- COPYRIGHT, 1933 By THE MACAULAY COMPANY Published 1949, by Lev Gleason Publications, Inc. by arrangement with the copyright owner.
