McCarthy, Editor, Elizabeth Barrett to Mr. Boyd—Unpublished Letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Hugh Stuart Boyd. New Haven, Connecticut: Published for Wellesley College by Yale University Press, 1955, 299 pages. Signed by McCarthy on title page and inscribed by her to Betty, John, and Jamie on front endpaper. Gilt title on red boards. Strong binding and clean pages throughout. No dust jacket. Overall a near fine copy. In 1863, two years after the death of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, a certain George Stampe proposed to print her letters to Boyd. Robert Browning denounced the would-be editor as a beast and a blackguard, and threatened to obtain an injunction against him. These letters, he said, were written “on the most intimate and personal subjects.” When she was alive, Elizabeth expressed a willingness to have the letters published, but only selected passages. Browning appears to have succeeded in reclaiming most of these letters, for 240 of them were in the possession of his son.
