Description: Handsome fold-out 1961 map of Southeast Asia, printed more than 62 years ago. This map opens to 19" x 25" and is drawn on a scale of 130 miles to the inch. It shows railways, roads, canals, oil pipelines, cities, towns, and natural features in excellent detail. The coverage area extends from Formosa to the Timor Sea, between the Andaman Islands, and western New Guinea. The map identifies a large "Dangerous Area (Unsurveyed)" in the South China Sea, west of Palawan. There are three large insets: [1] Hong Kong, Macau, and vicinity; [2] Singapore; and [3] Manila. It was published by the National Geographic Society in May 1961 as a supplement to The National Geographic Magazine. A few months after this map was printed, President John F. Kennedy ordered more help for the South Vietnamese government in its war against the Vietcong guerrillas. U.S. backing included new equipment and more than 3,000 military advisors and support personnel. America's first combat missions against the Vietcong would soon follow. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
