Description: These are the annual financial reports issued by the Governor of the Canal Zone for fiscal years 1977 and 1978, ending September 30th, for the Panama Canal Company and the Canal Zone Government - 2 of the last 3 years that the Canal and the CZ Government was "owned" by the United States. 1977 is 188 pages long and 1978 is 158 pages long, and each are 9 x 6 inches and softcover. 1977 was an important year for the Canal, as the Alaska North Slope Oil from Prudhoe Bay began to be shipped through the Canal late in the fiscal year, with the full impact coming in 1978, when toll revenue rose 18%. Also, in 1977, the dipper dredge US Rialto M. Christensen was delivered, replacing the 63 year old US Paraiso. In 1978, the suction dredge US Mindi was converted from steam to diesel, and two softnoses (buffer at lock ends) were hit and destroyed and replaced; also, 8 new "mule" locomotives were ordered from Japan (I know someone who was in Japan watching them being built). . Each is organized as follows: after a introduction with organization charts, Canal Traffic and Operations are covered, with emphasis on repair and maintenance, dredging and widening of the Canal channel and Reach, replacement of lock hardware and weed control. Next, Supporting Operations like human resources and services, Personnel numbers (over 13,000) and rates of pay, then the Financial Reports and 118 pages of Statistical Tables of traffic by commodity, source and destination and canal water use, finishing up with Governmental Activities (health, postal, licenses, Canal Protection & Civil Affairs) and the CZ Government's financial statements and Statistical Tables of govt activities (hospital admission, sacks and mail handled, arrests, etc.). These are fascinating documents and very historic, make great reading by Zonian and Canal enthusiast alike. Rarely seen. Very slight handling wear, otherwise like new.
