Rothe would be almost completely undeserving of notice if not for one interesting fact: Evident in her work, especially her prints, is a carefully balanced combination of qualities that unsophisticated buyers of art are likely to find irresistible. Considered as a showcase for these qualities--whose synthesis appears almost to amount to a marketing formula--the new exhibition at Hanson Galleries is instructive if artistically disappointing. Conspicuous among the works by Rothe, who was born and educated in Germany, are a number of ambitious mezzotints--prints in whose production, a form of engraving, she is impressively accomplished. Typically, the prints picture groups of anatomically convincing figures, often ballet dancers, in leaping and reaching positions. Pictured is "Emotional Intensity" by G.H. Rothe.
