In December 1816 the Lincoln Family moved to the Little Pigeon Creek settlement in Southern Indiana (Spencer County) where his mother died in 1818. In 1830, after 14 years in Indiana, they moved to Illinois. From 1831 to 1837 Lincoln spent six formative years in New Salem, where he was elected to the Legislature.
