Anna Bierstein Maksovna Russian Modern Abstract Landscape Brutalist Oil Painting

Description: This subtle and rich oil on canvas dates from the late 1980s and measures 22 ½” x 26 ¼” framed; 18 ¼” x 21 ¾” actual. The work presents a snow covered landscape with village on a sunny winter day using aggressively applied ala prima pigments with potent gestural strokes and heavy impasto and is signed lower right (in Cyrillic) A Birshtein. The back includes inscriptions of the artist’s name, title(?) and possibly address(?) with an exhibition (?) label all in Cyrillic so I am uncertain what it all signifies. The piece is in excellent (a bit dusty) condition with nice surface showing minor crazing where the paint is most heavily layered. Born in Moscow in 1947, Anna Birshtein Maksovna graduated from the Moscow Surikov State Fine Arts College in 1973 and has had her work included in dozens of exhibitions throughout Europe, first exhibiting outside the Soviet Union in the late 1980's. Her paintings are in private collections the world over including Russian state museums, such as the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the St Petersburg Russian Museum.
