L. Allen Plus The Hasty Pudding A Poem in Three Cantos Written at Chamrery, in Savoy, January, 1793 By Joel Barlow With a Memoir on Maize or Indian Corn Compiled by D. J. Browne 1851 C. A. Caxton New York Hardcover, 325 + 48 pages Plus 10 pages Publisher's Catalogue First published in 1849, The American Farm Book offers valuable and relevant information, including: how to identify soil, and know which kinds work best with which crops; instructions for preparing the land for planting by plow and irrigation; the purpose of meadows and grasses; tips for getting rid of weeds, bugs, and fungus; uses for corn, barley, rye, and wheat; methods to prevent rot and decay in potatoes; the health benefits for cattle of certain grains and vegetables; basic suggestions for farm buildings, fences, and shade trees.Illustrated throughout with 105 vintage line drawings and woodcut engravings, this wonderful piece of Americana will intrigue, inform, and intoxicate small-scale farmers and armchair gardeners alike. Allen was the editor of "The American Agriculturist" and author of Diseases of Domestic Animals. The book was published in the 19th century up through 1865, and after that, the New American Farm Book. Beyond that, it was only reprinted in the 21st century via the usual print-on-demand overpriced copies that have no collectible value. It's nice that this copy includes "The Hasty-Pudding" poem, the Memoir on Maize or Indian Corn, and the publisher's catalogue. The book has a good amount of cover wear, and the title, presumed to originally be on the spine has worn off. Binding good. The book is likely to have been a school book, as School District No. 5 is written in contemporary pen on the inside front cover. Interior is generally very good. 5 1/4" x 7 5/8" x 1 1/4"
