Antique 1926 HOTEL LINCOLN Indianapolis IN Gorham Silver Soldered Coffee Tea Pot

Description: Engraved on front "Hotel Lincoln" with note inside detailing when purchased and mentioned location. Coffee/Teapot is dated 1924 by the Gorham date symbol on bottom (as shown). Has a 5" wooden handle and have made no attempt to clean or remove the patina to this piece. The inside is clean (as shown). Measures 8 1/4" tall. Historically, Hotel Lincoln was located “at the heart of Indianapolis” at Washington Street (U.S. 40 – National Highway) and Kentucky Avenue. Work started on the grand hotel in 1917, but was not officially opened until 1921. The impressive 14-story 400-room downtown structure, was located only two blocks from Union Station and one block from the Interurban / Traction Passenger Depot / Station. The hotel was named in honor of United States President Abraham Lincoln. In 19th Century, Lincoln had actually stayed one night across the street in what was the Bates House. The Bates House was replaced with what was to be the Claypool Hotel (also demolished). The Hotel Lincoln structure design at the angled intersection resembled the famous “Flat Iron Building” that is located in New York City, and was addressed as such at times. The architecture firm of Rubush & Hunter designed the hotel, which the firm also designed several other magnificent structures in Indianapolis including the Coca-Cola Building, Circle Tower, the Indiana Theater, and the Indianapolis City Hall. The Hotel Lincoln continued to operate during the 20th Century, but by the early 1970’s, the hotel ceased operations. In 1973, the once grand Lincoln Hotel was demolished and replaced with what is known as the Hyatt Hotel / National City Center.
