Wilhelm Johann Diedrich Keuffel and Herman Esser were partners in the firm of Keuffel & Esser which was founded in July 1867 at 79 Nassau St. Manhattan. Hard to Find! The telescope on a transit level moves horizontally around a complete circle, which is marked at each degree and has measurements up to 360°. It can also move vertically 45° in either direction. Keuffel & Esser Co. Surveyors Level In Box. Oxodized brass original finish, has an 18.5 in. long scope with balancing screws and bubble level. No lens cracks, overall good condition. Box measures 10.25 in. high x 20 in. wide x 6.25 in. deep. Weight: 18.75 lbs. This transit has a serial number of 140557 PAT. 2438479 (incised on the transit body) which dates between 1930-1950 production year. There is the number HGH 794 incised on the body of the transit. Some of the flat black paint on the transit body has worn off over time and with use you can see the brass under it, see pics. The glass lenses appear to all be intact, no cracking or blistering. No dents or dings to the transit body or the body of the scope.Polished brass and black enamel painted metal body to the transit.
