Description: An original Australian albumen print photograph, dating to the late 1860s, in carte de visite format, approx. 103 x 63 mm (mount), by an unidentified travelling photographer on the Victorian goldfields. The back is is inscribed: "POLICE CAMP / GRAYTOWN". A mounted police trooper stands very still in front of the buildings in the police compound. Note the two young girls posed in the foreground, who moved slightly as the picture was taken. Now a ghost town, Graytown was once a booming gold rush settlement, with a population of 20,000 (!) in 1868. The site is situated more or less mid way between Heathcote and Nagambie, just over 100 km due north of Melbourne.I haven't been able to trace another copy of this rare and important image and it is quite possibly a unique survivor.Print has some light foxing, but is otherwise in very condition, as is the mount.FREE POSTAGE WITHIN AUSTRALIA.
