Description: Avengers, The - The '62 Collection (DVD, 2006, 4-Disc) Before Mrs. Emma Peel joined the team and before The Avengers came to America, Mr. Steed was a familiar figure on the British telly, pursuing his crime-fighting career alongside a shifting cast of sidekicks. During the Avengers second season, Steed was busy at work with Dr. Martin King, a beguilling jazz singer named Venus Smith, and the beautiful anthropologist Mrs. Cathy Gale. This purchase contains volumes 1, 2, 3 and 4. Digitally re-mastered and presented in their original U.K. broadcast order, episodes in this collection include: 1. "Mr. Teddy Bear": An infamous assassin is flushed out as Cathy pays to have Steed murdered. Steed is quite the daredevil professional agent as he takes great pleasure in pursuing Mr Teddy Bear. But just before Steed can reach the target, he is taken off the case, and it's all up to Cathy (rated #8 Cathy Gale episode on The Avengers Forever! website). 2. "Propellant 23": Steed is to greet a courier carrying a sample of top-secret liquid rocket fuel at an airport in France. However, before Steed can reach him, the courier dies, dropping his drinking flask unnoticed somewhere in the airport. Cathy learns of the existence of the drinking flask, as well as a bottle of hair restorer, but at every turn in Steed and Cathy's attempts to retrieve the fuel, they encounter the enemy. Thanks to Cathy's "garter gun" they finally get the goods at a bakery. 3. "The Decapod": The death of a young woman at the Balkan Embassy brings Steed to see the visiting President, who is negotiating a contract for aid with the British government. Steed talks Venus Smith into seeing the notorious playboy about a singing engagement—at least that's the claim. But soon Venus witnesses the body count rise as, one by one, President Borb's bodyguards are murdered, apparently by a wrestling champion called The Decapod. 4. "Bullseye": An old established British arms manufacturer falls under suspicion when their weapons begin showing up illegally in Africa. Then, when several bids to take over the company fail, the majority shareholders start turning up dead. So naturally Steed helps Cathy acquire a majority stockholding...(rated #6 Cathy Gale episode on The Avengers Forever! website). 5. "Mission to Montreal": When the stand-in for a boozy sex-symbol film star is murdered, the actress quits her job and takes a cruise to get away from it all. Aboard the ship, she is confronted by her husband, the ship's Captain, who pressures her to turn over the stolen microfilm she is carrying. When she has second thoughts, she drags Dr. King into the quagmire. 6. "The Removal Men": Steed sets himself up to become part of a team of assassins in order to prevent the murder of a young French sex-symbol film star who made the mistake of making political statements. Steed's plans go awry when Venus Smith, whom he had solicited to help, spots him with the film star and unwittingly tells one of the other assassins. 7. "The Mauritius Penny: An extremely rare stamp turns up on a common catalog list, rather like a da Vinci appearing in a sale flier for K-Mart. The fellow who made this discovery is shot. Fortunately, Steed had the man's phone tapped, and soon, with the aid of Cathy's philately expertise, they are able to get their feet in the door of a fanatic political group preparing to simultaneously overthrow the British and several European governments (rated #2 Cathy Gale episode on The Avengers Forever! website). 8. "Death of a Great Dane": An auto crash victim turns up in the hospital with £50,000 worth of diamonds in his stomach. He was an employee of the Litoff Organization, one of the world's great financial empires, which is mysteriously in the process of converting all of its assets into cash. While Steed is busy making himself a pest at the Litoff Organization, Cathy is snooping around a pet cemetery. 9. "The Sell-Out": Every time a meeting is set up to negotiate a settlement to some Middle East crisis, a mission-critical person is killed. Steed is convinced that there is an informer, a view that his superior, One-Twelve, does not share. To flush out the informant, Steed poses as the delegate he is to deliver to the next meeting. 10. "Death on the Rocks": A band of smugglers bent on doing away with Britain's Diamond Federation is forcing London's diamond merchants to buy illicit diamonds under the threat of losing their families. In order to root out the smugglers, Steed poses as a dealer and takes Cathy as his "wife" for the duration. 11. "Traitor in Zebra": An experimental satellite tracking system is jammed every time it is tested, despite its being a top secret project, and the man accused of being the traitor insists he is innocent. Steed is sent in as a military psychiatrist, and Cathy as a research chemist, to track down the real traitor. 12. "The Big Thinker": A supercomputer project named Plato is being sabotaged. Posing as an anthropologist researching dead languages, Cathy is sent in to investigate. While Steed claims to be headed for the Middle East, he in fact remains behind to keep a fatherly eye, so to speak, on his amateur spy. 13. "Death Dispatch": When a British courier is murdered in Jamaica, Steed and Cathy are called in to track down the killers. The trail leads to Lima, Perú via Bogotá, Colombia, where the duo engage in some humorous espionage. Then it's off to Santiago for a tense face-off with the politician behind it all. 14. "Dead on Course": It was fortunate for the few survivors of a suspicious passenger jet crash that the accident took place near a convent—or was it? The real puzzle is that there was more than one crash at the same location in Ireland. Hmmm, it wouldn't have anything to do with the bank consignments being carried on the planes, would it?
