When the Session and congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Dover, in the early sixties, began to lay plans for an appropriate celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Dover Church's founding, it soon became apparent that we knew too little about the story that had begun in 1714. The anniversary committee, under the chairmanship of Arthur W. Dobberstein, agreed that a comprehensive history of the congregation should be written, but they also realized that the task would require an author of very special qualifications. Just such a one was at hand in the person of Aline Noren Ehinger, who at the time was a member of the English depart-ment of the Dover High School, as well as a member of the congrega-tion of long standing. Mrs. Ehinger had been a deeply committed member of the congrega-tion since her arrival in Dover in 1927; she had been widely involved in community affairs throughout those years; and she had the knowledge and skills to do the kind of research and writing the task demanded.
