Description: After the start of the war with Japan, the master dies of the Peking Airmails, the Peking Martyrs (395-412), and the Second Peking Postage Dues (PD71-85) were brought from Peking to Hong Kong and turned over to the Commercial Press, Ltd. In each instance a slight alteration was made to the Peking dies to distinguish the new Hong Kong-printed stamps. AMF 12 and AM 13 show the change made to the pio character on the airmails. Commercial Press, Ltd. intaglio engraved the airmails in the same ten values and in the same colors as the Peking Airmails. Because of wartime conditions a variety of papers had to be used to deliver the large quantities ultimately printed. Fortunately, some of the same unwatermarked papers were used for the Hong Kong Martyrs, Postage Dues, and Airmails, and the same watermarked papers were used for the Hong Kong Martyrs and Airmails. As a result airmails are found on: watermarked paper; medium white unwatermarked papers (group 3 and some group 1); and a thin medium unwatermarked paper (group 5). The watermark (CRF 145) is the same yu character used on the Hong Kong Martyrs, usually in a normal position but sometimes reversed, inverted, or inverted-reversed. The stamps on unwatermarked paper come in Wide and Narrow Types.
