He was an outstanding warrior in the Civil War, but in terms of his politics he always played the safe side, regardless of his conscience - a "party man" - until it was expedient not to be one. The author also dabbles too much in Freudian psychology IMO.That being said, there is some interesting and important information about the mood of the country in the post civil war era and some interesting insights about the Reconstruction Era.
