Description: Really rare, very collectable coin silver rectangular spectacles. Hallmarked for "G. Griswold" on the inner right temple. I do not know if this maker is related to A. B. Griswold, the famous New Orleans southern coin silver maker. Left temple exterior is marked "12". Bridge style and temples suggest c. 1800, give or take 25 years. Temples extend and retract using a slide mechanism. Eyewear passed the silver acid test, but the case did not. Given age, I have assumed spectacles are coin silver (90% silver to other metals) versus sterling silver (92.5% silver to other metals). Glasses Dimensions: Temple length: 4" when retracted, 5.5" when extended Width: 4-3/8" Bridge: 1” at nose Lens: 1-3/8" Wide x 1" TallSilver weight cannot be accurately determined since non-silver parts cannot be separated from silver content. Total weight is 20 grams, including lenses, but not including case. Condition: Good condition considering age. Only mentionable issue on spectacles - Left retractable earpiece has lost part and is held together with thread, as photographed. Lenses in excellent condition -- No chips, flakes, or breaks on lenses. Case is in good shape -- biggest issue appears to be dirt accumulated around the bottom where soldered on -- it looks discolored. Lid has 3 pencil-point pings. Hinge opens / closes as it shouldAlways happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping. I only charge actual postage, and always use recycled packing materials. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views. I gladly accept returns, but please note I do not pay return postage unless there was a significant error in my description. The item listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. All dimensions and weights approximate. If you have a question or an assumption on an item prior to purchase, please ask. I much prefer to take the time on the front end to make sure you will be satisfied with your purchase. Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
