Description: An original art piece signed by Leroy E Schmaltz (1935-2022) from his personal art collection was first offered for sale at the iconic closing of the Oceanic Arts Tropical and Supply Warehouse. Leroy E Schmaltz was known as the Father of Tiki. Since his passing, many of his personal items, wood carvings, paintings, sculptures, sketches, etc. Continue to appreciate in value and are sought after throughout the world by Polynesian aficionados and Tiki collectors alike. Leroy’s work can be seen throughout Disney’s Adventureland, Frontierland and some of the most famous and Iconic Tiki Bars, Restaurants and Hotels around the world. Along with his partner, Bob Van Oosteen(1935-2024) they formed the successful company named, Oceanic Arts which supplied Polynesian Style supplies and Tiki related items from 1956 to 2023. Adding to the mystery and allure of this piece, this rare sculpture of painted artwork & assemblance, (Circa2000) is titled “Fanciful Fetish #41” with the words Shaman Tribal Council of Four, labeled under the wood base. Not only was this piece just another hand signed with Leroy E Schmaltz personal signature, but he masterly carved it into the wood assuring its prominence. The art piece is made up of cylindrically sized hand painted elements of tribal motif. Each cylinder base is wrapped with twisted, painted and stained straw & twine. There are small brass like pins of different sizes at the top and bottom as to hint jewelry beading of deep culture. Painted sticks protrude from three mini cylinders on the body of the art piece. His painted color palette is made of a deep wash of muted reds, violets and blue greyish tones reflecting the colors of tribal ancestry. More than likely this piece could be a reflection of his and Bob’s “Big Trip” travels to the South Pacific in search of new cultural experiences and art forms. The item has been proven to be authentic and is a must-have for collectors a one-of-a-kind museum like quality art piece worthy of valuable showplace, display and admiration.
