Description: Collector Quality Pyrite Cubes in Matrix SpainNavajun, SpainDisplay Stand NOT included DescriptionThe wonderful pyrite deposits of "Ampliación a Victoria" is located about 2-1/2 miles from Navajún in the Alcarama mountains. The deposit was discovered in 1965 and has become world reknowned for the unique and "perfect" pyrite cubes in produces... it has also become a standard of Spanish mineralogy. Pyrite is made up of iron Sulfide (FeS2) it crystallizes in perfectly formed cubes. They were formed during the Mesozoic Era, at the end of the Jurassic period, approximately 120 million years ago. They originated within the sediments of a large delta that covered the Cameros Sierra. The nearly perfect cubes of pyrite from Navajun, La Rioja, in northern Spain, are very popular given their shapes. Only a few other locations on Earth produce similar specimens but nowhere else than in this quarry in Spain is there such an abundance and the quality consistent over time. The main question is..... "Are these natural"? The answer is YES. All of the specimens that I have from this location are naturally occuring! This beautiful piece of marl matrix has a total of 7 cubes all in different sizes! two of these cubes are tiny and on the base and are fairly insignificant. You can see a number of vacated area that had cubes that were probably lost during the mining process...The largest cube on this matrix spans .51" in width. The cluster is absolutely magnificent! This beautiful piece sits perfectly for display with no assistance needed.
