Services were held under a brush arbor near the site of the present building. In those early days, there was no water near the church site so the fathers engaged an old man with his hickory stick to select a site to dig a well. Water was found only four feet beneath the surface of the ground and the well was never over ten feet deep. It served the congregation for many years. When the question of a name for the church came up, Shallow Well was chosen and so remains until this day. Without this well, the site could not have been used.A wooden pulpit was built during the war between the states. It was filled by a pastor who rode from Pittsboro. The Shallow Well Church building was erected in 1877. Electric lights were installed in 1927. The church grew. In 1930, three classrooms were added to the church. In 1948, the church was brick veneered and a new wing was added to the west side. A new education wing was completed in 1956. Shallow Well Congregational Christian Church became Shallow Well United Church of Christ in 1957, by the merger of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Fellowship Hall was built in 1978. The sanctuary was remodeled in 1986. The first cemetery opened in 1881. The first pastor was Rev. C.A. Boon. The present pastor is Rev. Garland Bennett, who began serving the church in 1977.- Courtesy of Dudley O'Connell
