Description: This lot consists of a hard back edition of- Creating Textures in Colored Pencil by Gary Greene Customer reviews This book is an excellent resource for the colored pencil artist. It contains information on how to create just about any subject a colored pencil artist would encounter. The book includes a section on materials and tools as well as information on the basics of colored pencil. From there it covers both natural and man-made textures. Natural textures include sections on flowers, fruits, vegetables and animals. There is also a section on leaves and wood and on earth and water. The demonstration on how to paint water drops is excellent. I have yet to tackle painting portraits but will definitely refer to the section on humans when I do. Man-made textures covers how to paint glass, porcelain, shiny metal and cloths. The book does not necessarily teach you how to paint an item step-by-step but rather how to create the texture of the item. So if you follow the instructions on painting a tomato, you can use the same techniques to paint any other shiny vegetable, such as a pepper, just by changing your main colors. Of the many colored pencil books I own, this is easily one of the best. Most books have the format of laying out the materials needed and then producing full blown pictures with step by step instructions. The reader is then supposed to copy the image as a line drawing and follow the steps to fill in the color. This works well enough bout does not push the reader to be creative nor to understand the principles underlying why or how the artist came up with the colors to place in each layer.Gary Greene's book breaks this mold. Instead of offering complete scenes, Greene offers "recipes" for common elements in drawings. Want to add a rose to your picture, Gary has a recipe for that. Need a vase to put the roses in? There's a recipe for that too. How about a table to place the rose and the vase on? There's a recipe for that as well as differing choices for the wood grain. By breaking things down into component parts, Greene's book is a vital reference for drawing your own scenes as well as revealing patterns for how to produce various textures with colored pencil, even those not covered in the recipes. By breaking things down to component parts, it's also possible to practice each element as its own standalone piece thereby creating much faster experience for newcomers and a valuable reference for veterans.Greene's tips for blending and utilizing watercolor pencils are also extremely helpful and detailed. His trick of using the same drawing to show various stages of completion in a large format rather than repeating the drawing over and over in smaller figures is a brilliant strategy I've not seen elsewhere. I recently bought a set of Polychromos and was looking for a good colored pencil tutorial book. When I saw this book on Amazon, I thought textures a good (and fun) starting point and decided to get it.Knowing almost nothing about colored pencils, this book was a great fun to read with lots of nice colourful drawings. It takes you through the process of layering step-by-step, and also I haven't actually tried any yet, the instructions look easy enough to follow. I will definitely be using this book as a reference for my first few months. One thing that did disappoint me though, is that there was no mention whatsoever of Polychromos, even in the colored pencil comparisons. The author seems to heavily favour Prismacolor over other brands, and to be honest, that was a bit off-putting at first for someone like myself who doesn't own it. But then, I suppose it doesn't really matter too much which brand of pencils you use as long as you find the techniques in this book useful.A very good book for a beginner like myself - particularly if you're a Prismacolor owner!
