It occurred June 25–June 26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in eastern Montana Territory. The battle was the most famous incident in the Indian Wars and was a remarkable victory for the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne. A U.S. cavalry detachment commanded by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer was annihilated. Believe it or not, some Native American Indians sided with Custer’s forces and played a role in the historic battle. He died June 2, 1929 in Big Horn County Montana. Hairy Moccasin was a Crow scout for George Armstrong Custer’s Seventh Cavalry during the 1876 campaign against the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He died October 10, 1922 in Big Horn County, Montana on the Crow Reservation.
