Early intermediate students can find months of material to work on in each DVD - starting on easier songs and working up to the more difficult. The more experienced players may still find surprises in the easier material or just move more quickly to the more advanced details of the chords, riffs and leads. This series does NOT include any TAB or written material - its designed to teach thru visual and audio instruction and demonstration. By watching and playing along with guitar in hand, the student is also training his ear with the ultimate goal of being able to pick out songs on their own. (The series focus is on the fingering hand, while picking hand shots are included when deemed necessary, most basic strumming and individual note picking is understood at this level.) NOTES ON John Mellencamp DVD: Great riffs & songs! This has both chords and leads although it is not extremely lead intensive. But these are classic rock songs that can be played simply by newer acoustic players or on electric with more complicated chord choices and fills to keep even more advanced players from getting bored. Some songs have just a few chords but Cougar (later changed to his real name) is a great producer and knows how to add great guitar riffs and fills to keep things interesting. Rockers like ROCK in USA are very roots based even in the drone fills and lead break which has Chuck Berry and rockabilly feel. Many songs like Hurt So Good don't have leads at all but keep it fun with a great mult-chord progression. Cherry Bomb is very simple but has a very cool harmonica line which is shown for extra fun. Songs like Jack & Diane are a great study in different chord inversions played up and down the neck and how to use them to differential different parts. Paper in Fire is a surprisingly fun song to play with more chances to examine the structure of a very interesting guitar part. If your a Mellencamp fan and want to learn the basic chords for acoustic guitar you can do that with this DVD, but its especially recommended if you want to learn the electric parts and would also like to go a bit deeper into his songs than is possible from any chord chart!
