Description: FLORENCE EASTON (MIDDLESBROUGH, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, 25 OCTOBER, 1882 - NEW YORK, USA, 13 AUGUST, 1955) She was raised in Canada but returned to England in 1898. She studied at the Royal College of Music and with Agnes Larkcom in London, as well as with Elliott Haslam in Paris. She made her debut in 1903 with the Moody-Manners Company, performing in Newcastle upon Tyne as the shepherd boy in Tannhäuser. During the 1905-1906 season, she toured North America with the Savage Opera Company. In 1906, she married the tenor Francis Maclennan (1873-1935), and the couple was engaged at the Berlin Court Opera in 1907. There, she participated in the premieres of Donna Diana by N. von Reznicek (1908) and Poia by Arthur Nevin (1910). Both artists also appeared at the Covent Garden Opera in London in 1909, singing in the premiere of Naylor’s The Angelus.In 1910, Florence Easton was heard in Edinburgh, as well as in Glasgow, Manchester, and Leeds, performing as Sieglinde and Gutrune in The Ring cycle. In 1913, she sang the role of Najade in the premiere of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos at the Großer Schauspielhaus in Berlin. She enjoyed great success in Berlin until 1913 and continued her career at the Stadttheater (Opera House) in Hamburg from 1913 to 1916. While in Hamburg, she portrayed Minnie in the German premiere of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West.During the 1915-1916 season, she sang at the Chicago Opera, debuting as Brünnhilde in Siegfried. In 1917, she joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she debuted as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana. On December 14, 1918, she performed the role of Lauretta in the world premiere of Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, and on December 27, 1919, she sang the role of the Mother in the world premiere of Albert Wolff's L'Oiseau bleu. She also starred in the world premiere of Deems Taylor's The King’s Henchman on February 17, 1927, and later that year performed as Dulcinée in Massenet's Don Quichotte. In 1922, she sang Fiordiligi in the American premiere of Così fan tutte.Easton remained with the Metropolitan Opera until 1929. Afterward, she returned to England, achieving great success at Covent Garden in 1927 as Turandot in Puccini’s Turandot. In 1930, she performed concerts in Berlin, and in 1932, she sang Brünnhilde and Isolde at Covent Garden. In 1934, she appeared as Tosca with the Sadler's Wells Opera Company. In 1936, she made a guest appearance at the Metropolitan Opera, reprising her role as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre. She continued to perform in concerts until 1943.
