I Found the Following on the Internet: Gianni, Ettore (act ca. 1905-1915, and perhaps into the 1920’s). Painted watercolor/gouaches of scenes around the Bay of Naples. A few watercolors of alpine winter scenes are known. Also, a few oils are known. Many of his watercolor/gouaches are in a roughly 8”x10” format. Ettore Gianni was born in Malta on Mar. 2, 1877. He was the youngest son and last child of Girolamo Gianni, the much esteemed Italian painter of scenes of Malta and of the ships of the Royal Navy based in Malta or transiting through Malta. Shortly after Ettore’s birth, the family returned to Naples; in due course taking up residence in Torre del Greco, a town near Naples. There is no record of an artistic education for Ettore, and it quite probable that he learned to paint from his father and his two older sisters, Maria and Livia, who were also artists trained by their father. Works signed with his full name “Ettore Gianni” are clearly attributable to him. However, It is unclear how many; indeed, if any, of the many Neapolitan gouaches signed simply “E Gianni”, and attributed to Ettore, were actually painted by him. His full signature of “Ettore Gianni” is in block letters and precisely upright with a very distinctive “E”. The first letter of each word is capitalized, the remaining letters are not. None of the “E Gianni” signatures I’ve seen conform substantially to these elements. Beyond that, many of Ettore’s watercolor/gouaches show a distinct, somewhat detailed style, something missing from the vast majority of “E Gianni” watercolor/gouaches. This said, Gianni signed Neapolitan watercolor/gouaches, whether signed by E, M, G, or Y, Gianni etc. were pretty much a commodity in Naples from the early 1900’s until late into the 1930’s. The niceties of copyright law and authorship of the works was not at all in the picture.
