Each pack contains 40 x 5" (approx.) squares of cotton Batik fabric in a mix of prints and colours all bundled into an attractive 'Charm Pack'. Mixed fabric squares suitable for a variety of projects - from handmade bunting to patchwork quilts, ideal inspiration for your next sewing project. Or a thoughtful gift idea for someone who loves to get creative. Batik is both an art and a craft, which is becoming more popular and well known in the West as a wonderfully creative medium. The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practised for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot. To make a batik, selected areas of the cloth are blocked out by brushing or drawing hot wax over them, and the cloth is then dyed. The parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original colour. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create more elaborate and colourful designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed and the cloth is ready for wearing or showing. This Batik product is handmade, it is not mass produced so slight differences and minor imperfections are common. There are often areas of darker or lighter dying on these fabrics, this is part of the Batik design and a product of the dying process. Usually there is no need to pre-wash these pre-cut fabric pieces, however very occasionally a piece of fabric will have some left over residue of the wax used in the Batik dying process, the wax is brown in appearance and can be removed either by brushing it off or, if this doesn't work, then by placing the piece of fabric in hot water to melt the wax off the fabric. Origin: Indonesia Every sale helps us give funds to elephant conservation projects. We support three charities doing amazing work for elephants in different parts of the world - Elephant Family work mostly with Asian elephants in India and South East Asia, their work includes saving and maintaining habitats and working with communities to avoid conflict where elephant habitats and human civilisations overlap. The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation works in animal conservation all over the world but our donations go towards their projects supporting African elephants in Uganda through the Waterways project and at the elephant orphanage in Zambia. The Save Elephant Foundation is based at the Elephant Nature Park in the Mae Taeng Valley, just north of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and specialise in providing care and assistance to Thailand's captive elephant population through rescue, rehabilitation, and education within communities.
