Franklin Library: CHARLES DICKENS: OXFORD: AMERICAN NOTES & PICTURES FROM ITALY

Description: Franklin Library leather spine edition of Charles Dickens's "American Notes and Pictures from Italy," a Limited edition, Illustrated by Clarkson Stanfield, Marcus Stone, and Samuel Palmer, introduced by Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, one of the OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS, published in 1983. Bound with a 1/4 red leather spine, the book has marbled paper end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. In "American Notes," the accounts of Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Louis make for interesting reading. The Mississippi was then the frontier, and the Western Steamboats are described in full, but Dickens did not like the river---"the hideous waters. . .that intolerable river..." "Pictures from Italy" is an account of a tour of two years that he made in 1844. On reaching the Mediterranean, Dickens is flabbergasted by the bright colors and mingled tawdriness and squalor of Genoa. The cathedral at Parma "is odorous with the rotting of the frescoes." Dickens in Rome is memorable for his description of the Carnival. Buildings, old or new, did not interest him. 467 pages. I offer combined shipping.
