Description: Frederic BOUTTATS copper engraving of Medea & Her Children, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, 1677 A copper-engraved image about Medea, from The Metamorphoses of Ovid from the first edition published in 1677. Medea, the daughter of King Aeëtes, helped Jason obtain the fleece in exchange for his promise to marry her. .Sheet: 6.5 inches tall x 9.125 inches wide. Trimmed at plate mark. Text on reverse. This is extremely fine and delicate, and a bit large to include in an edition of Ovid, but this was a exceptional version with translations and commentary in French and Latin. Out of 124 engravings, only three were signed. This unsigned Frederic Bouttats (1610-1675) is easily identified by comparing it to the plate he did sign in the same volume: “Callisto turned into a bear.” Safely shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer. Thank you for looking. I hope you’ll consider checking out my other listings, and enjoy your day.
