Description: This DVD has not been played. It is not shrink-wrapped, as Something Weird Video did not always shrink-wrap their videos. This DVD-R is rare and out-of-print. GIRL FEVER Opening with a view of Times Square accompanied by blaring rock-and-roll, Girl Fever is actually a big ol’ burlesque film dressed up in color and early-Sixties rock (by energetic greaser GEORGE J. CAMARINOS III) and sold as a Nudie-Cutie. Well… it’s not. But it’s not a burlesque film either. Actually, it looks like something in between: full of dumb comedy, garish color, lots of music, and titties-in-pasties, Girl Fever might just as well be considered a “Burly-Cutie.” Comical Russian producer Count Gregory auditions talent for his soon-to-open Broadway show “Girl Fever.” He signs buxom CHOO-CHOO COLLINS, a wonderfully trashy blonde who sings “Shooby-Shooby” in silver lamé pants. (Miss Collins doesn’t know how to lip-sync but, hey, who’s looking at her mouth?) He also hires the above-mentioned Mr. Camarinos III who sings “You’ve Got Me Bugged” with his arms flapping around. (Camarinos does Choo-Choo’s silver lamé one better by later showing up to sing in what looks like a silver space suit.) Count Gregory, however, does not hire EDNA THAYER, an overweight woman who dances around singing “I’m a Big Fat Mama.” A fat, middle-aged woman singing about being fat is, apparently, supposed to be hilarious. So is her having the hots for The Count who thinks Miss Thayer is scary even though he has the face of a mouse. He also realizes his show needs “a big star” so promptly travels the world looking for one…. First stop is an Egyptian harem where he watches belly dancers and gives the harem girls a lesson in American history, complete with comedy-routine flashbacks (including the same gay cowboy joke that pops up again in The Peek Snatchers). In Italy – no matter what the locale or country, it’s always a stylized interior set – The Count watches sexy stripper EBBA take it off in a park. In France, he goes to a Parisian café where just about everyone is an Apache dancer. In Spain, female bullfighter MIKA strips down to pasties (a “bullstripper”?), while PUPI & PUPI do one of the most bizarre novelty acts we’ve ever seen. Further east, Asian stripper SAJA gets down to the bare essentials. Big joke department: no matter where Count Gregory goes, fat girl Thayer is also there, lusting after him. Ha, ha, ha, ha! To those in 1961 that never saw a burlesque show (or a burlesque film), Girl Fever probably resembled a big, glossy TV variety show except, of course, with strippers. Of the two directors listed, SHERMAN PRICE also did The Imp-Probable Mr. Weegee and Judy’s Little No-No. For such a safe, by-the-numbers filmmaker, it’s surprising to learn that Price is also credited for shooting and editing the very odd “Pamela, Pamela you are…” The other director credited here – and in significantly smaller size than Price’s name – is YEVSIE S. PETRUSHANSKY. We have no idea who Mr. Petrushansky is, nor can we find anything else he’s done. Given the dual director credit and their unequal billing in the main titles, we’re sure there’s a story there somewhere.
