Beginning with the manual wind 44GS, the case design culminated in the automatic 61GS. The watch was designed by Taro Tanaka. His "Grammar of Design" would influence case design at Grand Seiko to this day. The 61GS case is a contrast in finishes and angles. The planes of the case are finished in a polished finish while the space between the lugs have a straight brush finish. This example maintains most of the brushed finished between the lugs. The case edges are relatively sharp. The planes maintain some of their mirrored finish. Case edges show some wear but do not show signs of over polishing. Wonderful patina dial. Quickset date functions as it should. This is a nice example of an iconic Grand Seiko reference. Unknown service history. We recommend a service. Our timegrapher shows -17 second per day but beat errror is high at 0.4 ms. We tested this watch by wearing for a few days. Actual performance while being worn was highly inconsistent. Watch seemed to fall behind by a couple minutes and then settle in.
