Description: Haemanthus albiflos(White Shaving Brush Lily) From South Africa comes this wonderful and highly-prized Amaryllis relative, that is found growing in diverse and even harsh conditions. In the wild, it may be found growing in deep shade on forest floors, along the rocky coast where it receives ocean spray, as well as on inland mountain cliff faces. Haemanthus albiflos is one of few evergreen species, and one that is also prized for being easy to grow and for tolerating some neglect! The attractive, oblong foliage varies from light to dark green, and can be completely smooth or covered with fine hairs. The upper half of the bulb is usually above the soil line and, with time, can multiply and form large colonies of bulbs. With a long blooming season that can begin in fall and extend well into winter, the attractive and unusual flowers look like white shaving brushes coated with golden pollen. The flowers can also appear sporadically throughout the year on mature plants. After flowering, attractive red or orange berries appear, which can be started in their own pots, or allowed to drop and sprout where they fall (especially in the garden). This wonderful species is very easy to grow in pots or in a semi-shaded area of the garden in mild climates, where they will grow and multiply for many years to come. When being planted in pots, they prefer shallow pots in well-drained soil, with the top half of the bulb exposed. A topdressing with small gravel is also recommended. Hardy USDA Zones 9 and above. Will tolerate temperatures down to about 34 degrees, but will not tolerate direct frost. In colder climates, it makes the perfect houseplant that thrives on "healthy neglect". And Happy Day... it's pest free! This offering is for one young blooming-size bulb. Shipped bareroot, with foliage and roots trimmed - very similar to what may be seen in the last two photos. I have been growing rare and exotic plants for nearly 50 years, and take great pride in what I grow and ship. All photos are of plants in my own garden and collection (unless stated otherwise).
