This book has a tipped in handwritten letter from the author to Mr. Mifflin” presumably George Harrison Mifflin (1845 - 1921) who was an executive in the publishing business. He served as president of Houghton Mifflin. This book is about the author’s grandfather’s close relationship with the famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne who wrote “The Scarlet Letter”. Anyone interested in history surrounding the publishing world would appreciate this book’s historical value and association with Nathaniel Hawthorne and the successful publisher at Houghton Mifflin. I wish that it might have adequately expressed my realization that the task of the “successor” is one of far greater magnitude than was that of the “founder” whose problems, even though they were many, were so much simpler and more easy of solution.
