The 1-1/2" silver-toned crucifix and the medal were made in Italy; the chaplet was designed and handmade by me in our home in the USA. All eleven beads are 8 mm genuine Czech glass, faceted and fire-polished. The Our Father is garnet red and the ten Hail Mary beads are alternating amethyst purple and aurora borealis crystal. We believe that although we are saved from the fires of Hell through the eternal sacrifice of Jesus Christ, there may be stains on our souls when we die from some sins, which would make it impossible for us to bear the beatific vision of God in Heaven. Purgatory is the place where we are fully cleansed of the results of our sins and prepared for eternity in Heaven. The people in Purgatory are happy, because they know they will eventually get to Heaven, although there is some suffering where they are - which is why they are called the "Poor" or "Suffering" souls. We also believe that we can pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and that our prayers will lessen the time the souls spend there. Once these souls get to Heaven, they are then saints who will pray for us, so that the more we pray for the Holy Souls, the more Saints in Heaven will be praying for us! The Catholic church is wonderful, isn't it? This is a wonderful devotion to get children interested in so that they will have friends in "High Places" as they go through life. It can be fun for them (and for adults, too) to use the chaplet to pray St Gertrude's prayer for the Holy Souls, which Our Lord told her would release 1000 souls each time it is recited! Praying that prayer on each of the "Hail Mary" beads, and St Bernard's prayer to the Holy Shoulder wound - said to release many souls from Purgatory - on the "Our Father" bead, would release well over 10,000 souls!! Our prayer card includes both prayers! I like to add a person or group of persons at the end of each St Gertrude prayer, such as "...especially those who have no one to pray for them", "...especially those who have died in battle", or "...especially deceased members of my family". You can encourage children to think of more.The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
