The electrical potential of an ion selective electrode is a function of the activity of certain ions in an aqueous solution. This potential can only be measured against a reference electrode, placed in the same solution. Therefore a reference electrode is also needed. Silver Chloride or Single or Double junction calomel reference electrodes can be used as reference electrodes. Having separate ISE and reference electrodes reduce cost and enable easier and cheaper replacement of individual electrodes. INSTRUMENTATIONHUB reference electrodes that are suitable for this ISE electrode are: RE-AGCL-1 Silver Chloride, RE-SJC-1 Single Junction Calomel and, RE-DJC-1 Double Junction Calomel electrodes. Measurements can be made with a high impedance millivoltmeter or instrumentation amplifier such as the INSTRUMENTATIONHUB CAFE1-ISE board. Before use, the electrodes must be calibrated by measuring a series of known standard solutions. INSTRUMENTATIONHUB calibration solution set for this application is CS-CLO4-1.
