Description: Fascinating description by author of Battle for Iwo Jima. Author was the Lieutenant commanding the 3rd Platoon, E Company of 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division in the first wave assaulting Iwo Jima on the edge of Suribachi volcano. Lt. Wells was badly injured as he led the platoon beginning its assault on Suribachi and, after crawling to an aid station, he was sent back to the hospital ship, offshore. Two days later, still under hospital care, and in spite of his wounds, Lt. Wells slipped onboard a Press boat leaving the hospital ship for Iwo Jima and joined his platoon. He was soon located by his Commanding Officer, Colonel Johnson, and ordered"to the rear" and was soon in a beach tent "hospital". Lt. Wells detailed descriptions of the battle as he lived it and later witnessed itas refugee from the hospital, are remarkable in detail -- giving a unrivaled picture of the destruction and and American sacrifice on Iwo Jima. Lt. Wells was retired from the Marine Corps as an honorary Major.
