MERSMAN, COVINGTON, KY MORTISE LOCK with KEY - FULLY RESTORED (16880-T)Vintage, Circa 1850-1860, fully restored, J.H. Mersman, Cov, KY. Mersman was born in Oldenburg, Germany in 1833 and migrated to Cincinnati. He opened a hardware company in Covington and sold builder's hardware. This lock may have been made by him, but it is more likely it was made by Alex Aupperle, an early and well known Cincinnati locksmith who made many locks and trained early Cincinnati locksmiths, possibly under apprenticeship. The lock is identical to Aupperle locks of the 1850's-1880's era.The lock is reversible. FACEPLATE: Faceplate is brass, 6" long, 15/16" wide, 1/8" thick. BOX: Box is 3 7/8" deep from the front edge of the face plate and it is 4" top to bottom. SCREWS: Screw holes are on 5 1/8" centers. BACKSET: Backset (the distance from the front edge of the face plate to the center of the knob post hole) is 2 3/4". DROP: Drop (the distance from the center of the knob post hole down to the center of the round portion of the key hole) is 2 5/8".KNOB POST: The lock requires a standard 5/16" knob post.KEY: The lock comes with one functioning key.
