Description: Pinus thunbergii - Japanese Black Pine - 12 to 14 inches tall - 3 years old in pruned form, topped the previous year to develop low branches and a shorter stature. Intended for bonsai use but will still grow upright in landscape plantings. Mature Height: 30 feet Aspect: full sun, tolerates some shade Hardiness Zone: USDA 5 Japanese Black Pines are most often used for bonsai and high-detail pruning because of their easily shaped branching habit and dense clumps of needles. They form wide branches with a short rounded top more readily than most other pine species and mature trees often look manicured even when they never received any pruning. The growth rate is fast, with some trees growing as much as four feet in a single year at our nursery. If the new growth is pruned before the needles reach their full length then new buds will typically form and grow at each cut in the same season. For stems that are 1-3 years old then cuts will typically form buds the following winter and produce new growth in late spring or early summer. Because most of the Japanese Black Pine seedlings we sell will be used for either bonsai or styled landscape trees we periodically prune most of our trees at regular intervals to maintain a large number of twigs and buds down down on the plant. Unpruned seedlings are available some years which will be denoted as 'unpruned.' See the last picture for an example of a pruned stem forming a new leader as well as multiple other shoots, with additional low branch bud development as well. Japanese Black Pines have a wider, broader habit than most other Pine species Trees are often formally pruned Wind-battered Japanese Black Pines growing on an oceanside beach Sample pruned tree showing the regrowth of a new leader as well as the development of additional low branches, resulting in a shorter and denser plant that is ideal for shrubs or bonsai. Shipping Information Your plants are wrapped in bundles in plastic bags and strapped in place in their shipping boxes and are mailed using either USPS or UPS. Most states require that all the soil be washed away from the roots for field grown plants which also gives us the opportunity to trim the roots into good form. The tops are pruned as needed depending on the species and size of the tree. Our handling time is 1-3 business days occasionally we skip the day before a holiday since plants will be sitting at the post office anyway.
